CHARACTER
Name: Rufus ShinRa
Canon: Final Fantasy VII
Age: 28
Timeline: Shortly after tossing Jenova and then himself off a building in Advent Children
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality: On the surface, Rufus appears to be nothing more than an arrogant spoiled brat with a cold and callous streak of cruelty. However, anyone thinking just that will be in for a rather rude awakening once they've gone up against him. Fearless and rather untouchable, Rufus knows his place in life. He knows how to get what he wants, and when he starts after something he sees it through with sheer determination, letting next to nothing stand in his way of getting it. If someone is unfortunate enough to do so, he will either work them into his plans or remove them from his path with little or no mercy or hesitation on his part.
Rufus certainly has a fairly dry, sarcastic sense of humor, even though it does not appear often or at the most obvious of times. One example of it being during his meeting with Cloud, in which he quips, that he surmises their fight means they won't be friends, and also in telling one of those working under him to stop it with the 'stupid horse laugh'.
Come the fall of ShinRa as well as Midgar and after going through the stint with Geostigma and recovering from his near-death experience, Rufus's outlook changed. He had come to realize now just what effects his company has had on the planet and its people. He knew that the damage and chaos he and his company had caused wouldn't be easy to forgive and forget, thus despite any good intentions he might attempt to offer to the world, there would be few who were willing to extend any hand back to him to use what he tried to give. With all he's been through in both his recovery from his injuries and the toll taken by Geostigma, Rufus has been forced to learn how to rely on others to gain the results he desires instead of going for it solo like he did previously. In the process of this he's come to realize the more people see him as someone they can come to like, the more likely he is to get them to agree to do things for him.
Despite this however there are very few whom Rufus will actually extend any real trust toward, the majority of these few being his Turks. In the two years he's stayed under their protection while recovering, he's finally come to trust them without hesitation when it comes to protect him, though he'll likely never actually verbally express this trust.
Those outside this small group, Rufus will likely judge on a case by case basis on just how open or closed off he desires to be with them, though more often than not he'll hold anyone he doesn't know at a distance and while he will be the soul of civility, one would be wise not to expect any real warmth from the man as he will not publicly display any affection or any other emotion that he thinks can be used against him.
Background: Rufus' History
Abilities: The man is strong enough to wield a double-barreled sawed-off shotgun one-handed, he's also very likely been taught some self-defense moves by the Turks as well as knowledge of how to use other firearms, though his personal favorite seems to be the aforementioned shotgun. Coupling this with his obvious intelligence and survival skills, and it becomes apparent that despite being merely human, Rufus is by no means any kind of pushover or your weak average person. He also knows his way around computers judging from his ability to gain information out of them during Before Crisis.
First Person: Ruby City Test Drive
Third Person: Rufus refrained from looking at the clock on the wall for the fourth time since he'd come to this room to try and get some work done. It wouldn't make the older man he was expecting to arrive today arrive with anymore haste than the man himself chose to expend, and it wasn't like there was anything out there any longer which could actually keep the man away from him for very long if Tseng didn't want to be detained. Turning his attention firmly toward the paperwork before him, ignoring the steadily growing stack of lawsuit notices against his now defunct company in favor of a report of how well their current venture into new sources of energy was faring.
It would seem that wind could make for a rather viable source, though they would need to figure out just how to work around the already apparent drawbacks in it. Using oil or coal was all very well...until such sources were either exhausted or complained about as having too much of a negative impact on the surface of their already battered planet. Thus while he certainly wasn't ignoring their availability as a resource, he was trying to find something he could present to the world when such a time came around. He wouldn't ever have the power he'd held once before he knew, but even a small new base of it would be more welcome than none at all. Eventually he had decided, the ShinRa company would rise up from it's ashes like the Phoenix if he kept working toward mollifying the masses and repairing the damage done in it's name.
The door opened before him, drawing Rufus out of his reading and musings to look up at the dark-suited man which had just entered his office. "Welcome back, Tseng. What did they have to say?" he asked the other, getting right to the reason Tseng had been absent from his side for the last week.
Tseng came to stand before his desk, arms held loosely behind the small of his back. "They declined, President."
One blond eyebrow arched just slightly at that response, or rather at the polite shortness of it. Especially given just whom Tseng had been to see. Tseng gave a polite cough at the expression, a hint of subtle wry humor in his dark eyes. "Their actual response was more along the lines of 'Not in a million years or even if you paid them for it.', Sir."
That was more like the response he'd honestly expected, but it never hurt overmuch to be certain just where you stood. He gave a small dismissive shrug of one shoulder and turned his gaze back to the paper he had been previously reading. "Their loss then." A brief pause as he finished reading the paper and once again turned his attention back to the man still before him. "Have we heard back from Reeve yet?"
"Yes. He says he has no interest in your proposal."
That stung, but it was brief and he had already decided that this time he wasn't going to take this denial of his aid as easily as he did from other directions. Perhaps he should have actually visited the man personally instead of sending someone to him with the written proposal. It was hard to thresh out a deal when you couldn't see the other party reacting during the presentation of it and offer then and there possible revisions which might see it accepted instead of flat-out rejected. "Set up a meeting with him this week. If he tries to deny me one, tell him he can either set it up when best for him or I'll end up choosing a time myself."
"Yes, sir." The man gave a short bow and then turned to leave in order to do as had been requested. Rufus turned his chair away from both desk and door to look out the window behind him. Reeve would accept his proposal in the end, his choices were rather limited really if he wanted to do what he'd already stated he desired to do with his new little group. One needed money to do those things and it was one thing that Rufus still had. Even if he had to stay hidden in the public eye, there would still be one person who knew just whom it was that helped the man rebuild and keep the peace on this planet. For now he'd play being content with that, after all it was said that the best things come to those who wait and he was quite willing to wait if it meant he got what he wanted in the end.
